“It was just him, in a van, with a paintbrush,” explains Smith.

Forty years later and things are decidedly more large-scale. Smith’s father retired 10 years ago and, since then, his son has expanded the company’s screen presses and vinyl cutting kit to include the more modern sign-writing accompaniments of digital wide-format presses, as well as expanding the warehouse workshop that the company moved into 18 years ago. His first press purchase after taking ownership in 2001, however, was not a massively successful start.

“The first press I bought was an EcoJet, but that didn’t last five minutes,” he admits. “We didn’t have anything like the service we needed and it was a bad experience.”

He was more successful in his second purchase, a Roland VersaCamm. Bought eight years ago, the machine was everything Smith was after in quality and speed, and the service matched the press performance. But at the start of last year, Smith realised that this old stager would soon be reaching the end of its warranty agreements and lifecycle, so he would need a second press to reduce the pressure. He wasn’t interested in just buying the same again, however, he wanted something newer and better. So he did what he does every year: he went to the Sign & Digital exhibition.

“I go to Sign & Digital every year and even if I come home with nothing, I’m still happy. But every now and then, you know there is something you have to get,” he explains. “I looked at both the Roland and the Mimaki machines and settled on the Roland LEJ-640, as – in my view – it was a superior machine to the Mimaki rival. If I want a guitar, I want a Gibson, and likewise when I went for a new press, I wanted a Roland. the Mimaki doesn’t have a name yet and although it was £10,000 cheaper, price isn’t everything. I’m looking for a 10-year life-span from the machine, so £10,000 over 10 years is nothing, really.”

Past experienceSmith bought the machine off the back of what he saw at the show, in addition to his own comparison of the specs and brochures of rival machines. He also took into consideration his past experience with Roland and, as a printer surrounded by sea, miles from the UK mainland, service was a massive factor in his decision.

“I have a good track history with Roland, which did make a difference,” he says. “Since we bought the VersaCamm, they have been really, really great. Roland proved to us that they could back us up. We need a company like that, because we are annexed on an island. You can’t have a supplier that has to think twice when you have trouble with a machine, or that is delayed in coming to help, because of where we are. We need someone who just says ‘yep, we’ll be there as soon as we can’. Roland really does deliver on that.”

The machine was bought from Roland supplier Printmax. Managing director Michael Bolton says that the machine was a great fit for Smith Signs.

“The LEJ-640 is the perfect fit for the company, with its flexibility to print directly onto rigid substrates as well as roll-to-roll,” he explains. “The white/clear varnish can provide a unique advantage, which has opened up many more design options and application possibilities for Smith Signs.”

 the company’s install is the first in the UK for the LEJ-640, but Smith says he had no concerns about being ahead of the rest when the machine was unloaded off the ferry at the beginning of last September.

A team of Printmax and Roland engineers unpacked and assembled the machine into the area Smith had prepared in the company’s warehouse. Smith then put two of his staff forward to receive the training, which they passed on to the rest of the workforce. there were teething problems to begin with, but Smith says these were as much a result of the staff’s unfamiliarity with the LEJ-640 as the machine itself, and that many of the issues could be solved by using the extensive guidance and solutions on online forums.

“There were teething problems, but it works both ways,” he says. “Sometimes, we have a crowd of wallies here who’d never used it and were ready to make every mistake possible, which they then blamed on the machine. there was unsettled period, but I expected that, so it didn’t worry me.”

The only mechanical problem the machine has had was a motherboard issue, which Roland flew out to fix straight away. the service contract on the machine enrols a mix of Printmax and Roland assistance.

“We provide the first-line support, so telephone, application, RIP, etc,” says Bolton. “But if a call is placed with us and we identify it as a hardware failure, we engage Roland, who are ready to provide onsite technical resource.”

Fantastic purchaseSmith has fortunately only needed to call on this assistance once. overall, he says the machine has been a fantastic purchase that he finds very difficult to fault. He says the quality, for example, is extremely good. the company’s client base is almost 100% Guernsey-based, though the occasional job from Jersey will be accepted, and the new machine has had a good reaction.

“The customers have noticed the difference,” says Smith. “The quality is extraordinary and the UV technology really makes a difference. It is flawless and I find it very difficult to pick fault with it. the VersaCamm is great and we still use it every day, but it does not lay down any real volume of ink. It is a very thin image, where the UV image is thick, so it is a completely different animal.”

As to which work goes on which press, Smith says he makes the judgement on a job-by-job basis about which press he thinks is more suited to the end product. He admits, though, that work schedules play a part in the decision, too.

As well as quality advances, Smith says the new press is also much faster than the VersaCamm, without any sacrifice in quality. And speed is the name of the game in this market, according to Smith.

 ”The new press is much faster and that is exactly what we need in today’s climate,” he explains. “I made a conscious decision to make this business self-sufficient. We don’t have to pick the phone up to anyone for work, because we have all the gear in-house. It has to be a one-stop shop, since we are cut off from the mainland, and with the speed of turnaround that people expect, we  just don’t have the time to outsource anything.”

Smith is almost 100% happy with the machine, but says he would give it four out of five because of one minor point.

“It loses a star only because the ink compartment is small. It’s not a problem as such, because you can just refill it, and that is my only moan,” he reveals.

As for the firm’s next move, a new press investment is not on the cards yet. Smith’s got this press scheduled in for the next 10 years or so. He does think a new laminator will be bought in 2012, though, and that he will tinker a little with his staff’s job titles.

 ”We have 11 guys here and everyone has a set job description, but I want everyone to scratch each other’s back if we need them to,” he explains. “I want everyone to be able to do every job, which will ensure that we are a more flexible unit.”

The company may have moved from a van to a warehouse, and from a paint brush to the latest in wide-format technology, but that concentration on getting the job done right has remained throughout its forty years. With the introduction of the LEJ-640, though, the job is perhaps a little easier than in 1970.

Empire State Development’s Board of Directors met today in new York City and approved funding totaling $3,360,000, pledging to create 168 new jobs and retain 1,421 existing jobs in new York State. 

One Economic Development Fund grant for $250,000 will go to Mercury Print Productions, inc. in Greece.

Mercury Print Productions, inc., a commercial printer with an on-demand digital print capability, in-house bindery, digital book print division, electronic media subsidiary and fulfillment and warehousing units, has acquired and installed a Kodak XL 500 Prosper Press at its Greece facility, which houses its book division.  The company also purchased various pieces of finishing equipment.  Its grant will be used for a portion of the cost of the purchase of machinery and equipment.  The project will retain 210 jobs and create 40 new jobs.  Total project cost is $4.92 million. Cisco Systems fired off a 500-word blog post on Feb. 15 detailing its objections to Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype. but only one word in the complaint really mattered, and that’s Lync.

For the unfamiliar, Lync is Microsoft’s play in the so-called unified communications space. It’s a software package that handles instant messages, video conferencing, phone calls, and meeting coordination. more than that, Lync functions as something of a virtual assistant, letting people know when you’re away from your desk or on the phone, and serves as a supercharged corporate directory.

The software has been around in various flavors for a few years, but as of late it has really taken off. The number of people using Microsoft’s voice technology in corporations grew about 250 percent last year, while Lync revenue has risen by double digits each quarter over the same period. It’s one of the fastest-growing software products in Microsoft’s history.

Cisco already had a beef against Lync because it sells rival unified communications products that range from IP phones to such things as WebEx and video conferencing systems. but what really has Cisco in a tizzy is the idea of Microsoft uniting Lync with Skype. so on Wednesday it filed an appeal with the European Commission, asking for restrictions to be placed around Microsoft’s Skype purchase. (Microsoft closed the $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype last October; Cisco’s lawyers sure take their time writing briefs.)

Cisco apparently wants to ensure that Microsoft’s voice and video services work with those from rival companies, so that a worker on Skype/Lync can hold a call with a worker on Cisco’s services. to prove its commitment to this idea, Cisco says it has “demonstrated interoperability” between its products and those from Polycom. It’s not exactly the strongest support case, but the truth is that both corporate and consumer video-conferencing players have shown little interest in linking their services—for obvious reasons.

What makes the Skype/Lync pairing particularly daunting to rivals is the bridge that this software would create between the corporate and consumer worlds. There’s this idea of a patient being able to contact a doctor’s office via Skype to make an appointment while tapping right into the doctor’s corporate phone and calendaring systems via Lync. if Microsoft really could make a crossover voice and video service, it would rattle Cisco, Google, Apple, and plenty of other companies.

In a perfect world, Cisco no doubt would love to have acquired Skype and then inflicted the same kind of competitive pressure. like Microsoft, Cisco has billions of cash dollars overseas and could have easily gobbled up Luxembourg-based Skype. Cisco, though, makes most of its money selling equipment to telecommunications carriers that remain nonplussed by Skype’s ability to provide free, Web-based calls. this made a Skype purchase a nonstarter.

But really, what’s the point? It’s all been said before, and by better men than me. Bashing the Star Wars prequels has become a socially ordained tradition in our culture, in much the same way that giving the EDF doorstep salesman a five-minute head start before you broke out the shotgun used to be.

Nowadays, I’m not overly horrified that yet another version of the Star Wars saga is being foisted on the world, and I don’t find myself becoming exercised that mr. Lucas will once again fail to resist the urge to tinker under the bonnet, fruitlessly searching for an empty inch of screen that hasn’t already been filled with some robotic widget that can be given away with a Happy Meal in a lucrative sponsorship tie-in.

I’m not keeping up with the Joneses anymore, I refuse. When it comes to the exhausting game of getting the very latest versions of the Star Wars films on the very latest format, I’m afraid my wad has long since been shot.

A long time ago, in a London borough far, far away, I bought the Story of Star Wars LP, having worn the local library’s copy down to a nubbin after borrowing it for about six months straight. I diligently taped the radio dramatisation off Radio 1, and did my own artwork on the cassette cases (later on, I picked up the official release cassettes, and I’m fairly certain I’ve got the compact disc releases knocking about somewhere). I was well on the way to creating my own Star Wars multimedia experience.

I added the US editions of the Han Solo books to my growing collection (courtesy of a little science fiction bookshop called Forbidden Planet up on Denmark Street) when I found out that the American author – in a sublime bit of cultural ignorance that was never going to survive the journey across the Atlantic intact – had blessed Han’s reluctant robot sidekick with the name Bollux.

At school, my “got, not got” obsession was Star Wars cards (for appearances’ sake, I also dabbled in football stickers, but my heart wasn’t ever really in it). Blue ones, red ones. Unlike the well-connected kids – the kind of kids who would grow up to have fabulously trendy media careers – I could never get my hands on the ultra-rare green or yellow cards. Twenty-five years, one boozy Sunday lunchtime, and several eBay auctions later, I finally did get my green and yellow Star Wars cards, damn near a full set. So what do you think of that, mr. Managing Director of one of Europe’s leading independent record labels?

In 1982, I waited in feverish anticipation for the bloke from Radio Rentals to deliver the family’s first VCR so that I’d be able to tape the very first ever showing of Star Wars on UK television that weekend. Of course it was on ITV and so – after a crash course in how to operate a VCR – my heart was in my mouth every time I had to re-start recording after the adverts (please, please, please, don’t let me hit the wrong button). When my sister tried to trick me by telling me I was taping the wrong channel, I almost throttled her with the cable of the remote control. for anyone who thought they’d misread it first time around, that’s the cable of the remote control. Even at the tender age of eleven, you did not fuck with me when it came to Star Wars, not unless you were looking to unleash my inner Peter Sutcliffe.

I first got the proper copies of the films on widescreen VHS about a decade later (and this, young ‘uns, was long before widescreen TVs and all this “anamorphic” gubbins. Letterbox format? Tell me about it, it was like watching the films projected through a gnat’s chuff). I was working part-time in the local sports centre (as the obnoxious git who hoses down the changing room floors and gets your socks wet) and it took five hours of pissing off members of the public to raise the necessary funds to buy each film.

I bought them all over again a couple of years later, when someone at Lucasfilm decided they should be digitally remastered, or THX-ed, or something. I went out and got the 1997 Special Editions when they came out on home video, and again when they got the widescreen release treatment a short time later.

Then some fucker went and invented DVD, and the whole sorry cycle began once more – but not before (unsure as to whether the new format was going to catch on or not) I’d picked up the widescreen VHS release of Episode I: the Phantom Menace .

I even got hold of the far East DVD of Phantom from somewhere, which had Ewan McGregor dropping the f-bomb in the “making of” documentary (“Do you want to do Star Wars, they said. I said too fucking right!”), and the Australian DVD version of Attack of the Clones where Jango Fett lands a vicious headbutt right on Kenobi’s kisser. That’s a DVD that had to travel over 10,000 miles just so I could watch a mere one second of footage the British Board of Film Classification didn’t want me to see.

But, after all that effort, all that consumption, I find I can’t be arsed anymore. I’m done. for all the bootleg copies, re-releases, spin-offs and merchandise I’ve gone out and bought over the years, I don’t think I’ve just sat down at home and put on a Star Wars film for the best part of a decade – and I’ve got a very decent projector and amp on constant standby; at the drop of a hat, I can watch those films six foot high and ten foot wide, with surround sound that would make your perineum quiver. but I never particularly feel like it. Somewhere along the way (and I suspect, in the end, it was Revenge of the Sith what did it), I simply peaked. So bollocks to the “complete” Blu-ray editions, and bollocks to the 3D cinema releases, and to all the inevitable home cinema editions to come.

I think it was Simon Pegg who called the prequels “retroactively destructive”, and they certainly seem to have done the trick for me. the part of my brain that’s successfully blocking out the memory of the prequels has done its job so well that it’s apparently robbed me of my enthusiasm for the original films. it makes no sense to me, because everything up to now suggests that of an evening, I should be turning to my wife and saying “No dear, we shan’t be watching Birdsong, because tonight is Star Wars night again, you know that. Ready your perineum”.

However, as much as I may be done with Star Wars, it looks like Star Wars isn’t done with me. With what I can only describe as jaw-dropping insensitivity to my Lucas-free lifestyle, Vodafone have weighed in with a Star Wars-themed advert that celebrates everything that jarred about the prequels. the male protagonist is a charisma-free plank who shares no chemistry whatsoever with his female lead. the characterisations are all over the shop (Yoda has turned into Simon Day’s Billy Bleach character from the fast Show – “Hold them two bells, mate. Go on. Press Start”). It’s only sixty seconds long but, like each of the prequels, it could do with being a good half-hour shorter, it’s overly reliant on visual trickery, and the funny bits….aren’t. Wasabi? Fucking wasabi?
